Safe Place to Talk About Race

Dear friends,

Our next community discussion on a Safe Place to Talk About Race is coming up soon. The United Methodist Church of Whitefish Bay, 819 E Silver Spring Dr, continues to graciously offer space for us to meet.

Walnut Room #111 on these Thursdays:

March 22, April 26, May 24, and June 21, 7 to 9 p.m.

Last time we met, we read an interview with a Chinese American Woman, Evaon Wong-Kim, Ph.D. In the interview, discussion occurred around the idea that the multitude of cultures are lumped into Asian/Pacific Islanders, the feelings of one culture about another culture within the Asian community, the challenges of being an immigrant in the US, the stereotype of the ‘model minority, the colonization of Hawaii, racism and their relationship to the civil rights movement.

All of this led to more questions due to our feeling of ignorance about the community. We have invited Ron and Christine Kuramoto (and Saehee Chang, but she will be out of town) to share history, experiences, and knowledge at the next meeting on March 22. We know there is a growing population of people with an ‘Asian culture’ in White Fish Bay. How can we engage and welcome them into our community?

We hope with this advanced notice you can mark your calendars and join us. Please feel free to invite others too!

See you on Thursday, March 22 to hear Ron and Chrstine share!

Greetings,

Ellen Parmelee and Kathy Wurzer

Cluster Reflection Meeting Saturday, April 7th

Dear friends in Milwaukee County Cluster,

We are getting more excited about this next Reflection Meeting to be
held Saturday, April 7th from 1pm to 3 pm at the Wauwatosa Public
Library.

During the Fasting period, we ask if you can direct your prayers for
the success of this gathering and for the goals we will set at that
time for the advancement of our Cluster. As we consult we will be
more aware of where we are in our growth and what next steps we can
take collectively and individually. This Cluster gathering is a
perfect time to consult and learn about this most powerful process for
building a more vibrant community. We will serve light refreshments
too! Eager to see all of you there.

Loving greetings,
Ellen Parmelee, Natalie Kahn, Susan Watt

Subject: Invitation to WI Youth Gathering

March 5, 2018

To all youth (15-30 years old) residing in Wisconsin

Dearly loved friends,

Nearly 5 years ago, the Universal House of Justice called for youth
conferences to be held in many localities across the world. In a
message addressed to the Bahá’ís of the World announcing the
conferences, the House of Justice extended an invitation to “every
youth who recognizes in the methods and instruments of the Plan potent
means for movement towards a better society.” Many youth responded to
the call, and those who participated in the conferences received a new
surge of energy and were ready to commit to a life of service –
serving as children’s class teachers, animators, tutors, hosts for
devotional gatherings as well as accompanying others on the path of
service – in their communities or selected neighborhoods. Others went
on and dedicated their time to serve as home front pioneers.

On behalf of the Continental Board of Counsellors, it is with great
joy that we invite you to an evening youth gathering on Friday, March
23 hosted and facilitated by our dear Counsellor Sonlla Heern. The
gathering, intended for all youth in Wisconsin ages between 15 and 30,
will provide an opportunity for you to consult on the role youth play
in the community building process, share learning, as well as receive
guidance and inspiration, and make plans to continue your life of
service.

The gathering will be held on Friday, March 23 at the Madison Bahá’í
Center (324 W Lakeside St, Madison, WI 53715) from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00
p.m., with dinner. Please register here as soon as possible, as your
prompt registration will allow the friends coordinating the event to
make necessary arrangements. Overnight accommodation with local
friends will be arranged for those who may need to stay on Friday
evening, and childcare will also be provided for youth with young
children.
